While he might prefer to be translating the French poets or sounding the depths of Dostoyevsky’s more problematic characters, John specialises in the translation into English of legal, financial and business documents from over 25 western and eastern European languages. He works on many of the company’s most challenging projects, where his extensive knowledge and long experience are invaluable assets.
John began his career working for the Translation Service of the New Zealand Department of Internal Affairs. He then worked as a freelance translator before joining NZTC in 1988.
About his work philosophy, he says: ‘I believe that, wherever possible, the translated text should read as smoothly and naturally as the source document. During the years when I often worked as an interpreter, I developed the credo of “interpret with the accuracy of a translator, and translate with the fluency of an interpreter”. Pursuit of this aim has led to a close interest in contrastive linguistics and cognitive semantics.’
John is much admired within the translation industry at home and abroad as a ‘translator extraordinaire’. He regularly attends and contributes to industry conferences, locally and overseas.
