There are many words to describe homeless people, such as bum, tramp, drifter, beggar, hobo. But during the Soviet era, Russian officialdom came up with the abbreviation “BOMZH” to describe such people. Derived from the Russian for “of no fixed abode”, it became a commonly used expression. This word has also produced expressions such as “bomzhatnik” (night shelter) and “bomzhyevat” (to be a streetperson).
