The cost of translation

  • The implementation of localization and translation memory technology means that the cost of translation per word is constantly falling providing substantial savings, particularly for large jobs.
  • Reducing translation costs

    The translation of documents into foreign languages requires considerable effort, time and money, and these factors multiply with each additional language and each updated version produced. As the size and the complexity of the job increases, so does the time required for project management, and quality assurance in addition to the human cost of the translations themselves. However, many of these activities can be automated or avoided all together with the use of new systems that integrate content creation, localization and content management into a single system. Where such systems have been implemented, translation clients have seen substantial savings in translation costs, by reducing the total number of words which require translation (or re-translation). Typical estimates for the efficient use of this technology are around 30%.

    Reducing repeated translations using translation memory

    Current translation memory systems can tell what has been previously translated, what content can be reused, what new content has added or changed in previously translated documents. This means that only text that that requires new translation contributes to the translation price. NZTC International has fully implemented the use of translation memory software. This means that "translation memories" are maintained for specific clients and particular products. Updates of user or technical manual thus only requires the translation of the content which is new or has been changed providing significant savings in the cost of translation by eliminating the time consuming task of re-translating text which has previously been translated, edited and verified.

    Using Content Management to minimize translation cost

    Using modern Content Management software, clients can think in terms of text components rather than complete documents. Such text components may be repeated processes, procedures, or technical data which need to be translated once only and can subsequently be reused in different documents or in updated versions. The cost of translation is substantially reduced by the use of such techniques. NZTC International can advise clients introducing such systems on how to interface efficiently with its translation memory software tools to minimize translation price.

    Payment terms

    For work invoiced to a New Zealand address, a local Goods and Services Tax (GST) of 12.5% is applied. This local tax is not applied to work for international clients, including Australia. VAT and other value-added taxes are not applied to work carried out for clients in the United Kingdom or other European countries.

    If you are completing a translation project with us for the first time, we will require a deposit to commence work for you. The amount of deposit required will be discussed with you in advance. Where credit is granted, payment is strictly due on the 20th of the month following date of our invoice. Unpaid accounts will incur late payment fees and collection costs.
